She knelt in the center of a dark room, her hands tied to the floor behind her back. Her captor, a tall, lean man, watched curiously as she struggled weakly at the bonds that held her. Days without food or water had brought Alana to the point of exhaustion. The man took a single step toward her, then another, and another, to finally stand solidly in front of her. Would she cross to the window and look at the sky, wondering what lay in store for her?   
Would Juliet turn up the volume and drown out her world with music?   
Would she promise allegiance to herself, but realize it is all for naught? Or would she carry on?   
Would tears refuse to come, as hard as she tried, then stream down her face unbidden?   
Would she long for a pair of arms to hold her safe, secure? A pair of eyes to look deep into hers and read her very soul?

Type One Empathy   Type one diabetes. Diabetes mellitus. Whatever you call it, if you have it your quality of life is lowered. There's no getting around it- you're different. It doesn't matter what everyone else says, it's how it is. Doctors tell you, "It's okay. You can do everything you used to do." Not true. Sure, you can do most things, like walk, for instance. The key word, though, is "most". Not to take anyone off of their high horse, but I'm telling my interpretation and I think that most who have this disease will agree with me. I'm not trying to be pessimistic, and I don't want to bring anyone down.        Type One Empathy
